Herb for Health Recipes: Not-so-sober October
Lemon & Basil Spritzer and Smash, Cocktail or Mocktail
On the subject of a dry (booze free) month our first thought was for a classic mojito, sans alcohol. We were also recommended to look into the lemon and basil spritzer, a wonderful pairing of flavours for a mocktail and in keeping with our recurring theme of herbs for health.
The Recipe
Start with the Basil Leaves and Sugar
-
Put the mint leaves in the bottom of a tall glass. Add a splash of soda and the sugar.
Muddle
-
Use the back or handle of a spoon to muddle (smash) the basil and sugar together. This helps to dissolve the sugar and infuse the flavours.
Squeeze in the Lime
-
Squeeze the juice from the lemon halves into the mix.
Add the Ice
-
Don't overfill the glass with ice.
Top with Soda
-
Top off the glass with soda. Leave space at the top for stirring.
Stir and Enjoy
-
Gently stir the ingredients together to mix the flavours. For added style, add a basil top as a garnish.
If you want the version with gin, this video goes into a little more detail. Alternatively, before adding the soda, pour a shot of gin over the ice and basil mixture.
Enjoy the flavours of basil and lemon for a summer vibe.
Cheers!
Alastair
