ABOUT US
At Aerospring Hydroponics, we believe that everyone should experience the joy of fresh produce. That’s why we have dedicated our efforts to helping people grow, eat and share food from their home.
Our story began in 2015 when our founders, Thorben and Nadine Linneberg, set out to grow their own tomatoes in their apartment in Singapore. This initial quest blossomed into a love of gardening - and for an interest in creating a sustainable food source at home.
Yet, it was no easy task. A densely populated city-state where most people live in high-rise apartments, Singapore sees less than 10% of its food supply grown nationally. The climate and land-scarcity make growing food challenging, which means high prices of imported fresh produce.
We wanted all of the nutrients that come from eating food harvested that day. And we had concerns about pesticides and where our produce was coming from. We also knew that these concerns were very real for many people - no matter where they live. These factors, and a natural interest in problem-solving, inspired us to grow our own food at home.
Soon the problem of space became an issue. Instead of growing outward, we had to grow upwards on our small balcony. After failing countless times with soil gardens, we devised a vertical hydroponic system that would automatically water and fertilise the plants. The first prototypes proved so successful at growing food that it quickly turned us into weekend urban farmers. Despite our hectic lifestyles, we were able to grow enough food without too much time or effort. We quickly realised that we could share this with our friends and family and help them grow a mini-garden of their own.
Encouraged by the early wins, Thorben set about prototyping systems for commercialisation. The goal was to design and build a food safe system that was functional and looked chic on any urban city balcony. Twelve months of 3D prototyping followed, which led to the unveiling of a sleek, modular vertical gardening system, which was simple to assemble and easy to maintain. Even better, it fit into the smallest of spaces. We received our first US patent in 2020.
Upon the success of our outdoor systems, we started developing a prototype for an indoor system, to cater for those without sufficient outdoor space and sunlight. We also wanted to develop a system that could be used two-fold: grow with the outdoor system in warmer months, then bring it inside during the colder months so that you can enjoy fresh produce in the dead of winter. A further 12 months of development saw us toiling to identify the right lights, accessories and structure to house the system in. Our Aerospring Indoor system was launched in 2018. We continue to obsess on ways that we can improve our products to deliver functional design, high-performance and an outstanding user experience.
Given the challenges in the world today, including food safety, food security and sustainability, we believe there is a need to grow our food closer to home. Whatever our food situation, we must start thinking about how and where our food comes from - and we need to inspire the next generation to live a more sustainable life.
Aerospring Hydroponics’ goal is to provide the best hydroponic growing experience possible. Our mission as a small, hands-on company is to empower people to take back control over their food - to reconnect with it and truly experience the joy of growing their own food, right at home. We are ourselves growers and urban farmers, and we want to pass on our positive experiences to you.
We are committed to delivering high-quality hydroponic systems that make having a productive, useful and versatile home garden easy, no matter where you live. Whether you live in a city, the suburbs or a rural environment, we believe year-round home gardening is an achievable vision. And we hope you will join us on this ambitious and worthwhile journey.
